Flexon Distraction

Flexion-distraction is a chiropractic technique used to treat conditions affecting the lumbar spine, particularly those involving disc herniation, sciatica, and spinal stenosis. It is a gentle, non-invasive approach that involves a specialized treatment table and controlled stretching of the spine to alleviate pressure on the intervertebral discs and nerves.

During a flexion-distraction session, the patient lies face down on a specially designed chiropractic table equipped with movable sections. The chiropractor applies gentle pressure to the patient’s spine while simultaneously flexing and distracting (pulling apart) specific segments of the lumbar spine.

The flexion-distraction technique aims to achieve several therapeutic effects, including:

  1. Decompression: By gently stretching the spine, flexion-distraction helps to decompress the intervertebral discs, reducing pressure on herniated or bulging discs and promoting the retraction of disc material.
  2. Relief of nerve compression: Flexion-distraction can alleviate pressure on the spinal nerves, reducing pain, tingling, and numbness associated with conditions such as sciatica and spinal stenosis.
  3. Improved spinal mobility: The controlled stretching and mobilization of the spine during flexion-distraction can help improve spinal flexibility, range of motion, and overall joint function.
  4. Enhanced circulation and healing: The rhythmic pumping action of flexion-distraction can promote increased blood flow and nutrient delivery to the spinal tissues, facilitating the body’s natural healing processes.

Flexion-distraction is considered a safe and effective treatment option for many individuals with lumbar spine conditions, including those with acute or chronic low back pain, disc herniation, facet syndrome, and degenerative disc disease. It is particularly well-suited for patients who may not be candidates for more aggressive forms of treatment, such as surgery or spinal manipulation.

One of the advantages of flexion-distraction is its gentle nature, making it suitable for patients of all ages and fitness levels. It is typically well-tolerated and rarely causes discomfort or side effects.

Overall, flexion-distraction offers a conservative and non-invasive approach to treating lumbar spine conditions, helping patients achieve pain relief, improved function, and enhanced quality of life. If you’re experiencing low back pain or related symptoms, consider consulting with a qualified chiropractor to see if flexion-distraction may be a suitable treatment option for you.
